May 13, 2004 · I could use any help or advice on how to properly adjust the governor on a Briggs Engine. Thanx. In order to adjust a governer you must first know how it works and weather or not it need adjusting. When you put the engine under load the governor should advance the throttle perhaps to full depending upon the extent of the load.
To control engine speed, a mechanical governor uses gears and flyweights inside the crankcase to detect changes in the load and adjusts the throttle accordingly. This means both valves closed and piston moving air out the spark plug hole. Then you go 1/4 inch past TDC. That's what briggs says. You can go 1/2 even 1 inch. The exact 1/4 inch past of piston moving down is not that critical.
